Roots and Fruits

The Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5-7), Deuteronomy, and the Gospel of John 12-17  are structured like a tree that starts with specific topics (a branch), but the topic points to a more general source, origin, or root.

The more general origin or root is the person and work of Christ.

In this article, we will discuss how Commandments 6 through 10 of the Decalogue (from Deuteronomy) are explicitly referenced in sequence in Matthew 5-7. Subsequently, it will be shown that Commandments 1 through 5  of the Decalogue( from Deuteronomy) are implied within the same text of Matt 5-7.

The last five commandments are called “fruits” of the Decalogue.

The first five commandments are called “roots” of the Decalogue.

The “roots” and “fruits” form a foundation and a framework of a spiritual house of mercy and grace.
